After I wrote the article about Xiangyang market's close down, last weekend I happened to find part of the answer to "Where would the vendors go?"
I walked past our regular DVD shop near our apartment and found they have just reopened after a renovation to the shop. Now, most the shop was full of handbags - LV, Prada, Channel etc.
I couldn't help but going in to have a look. I felt like I was in one of the shops in Xiangyang market except that most of the handbags are single priced RMB55! That's much cheaper than those in Xiangyang road. Some girls asked if the bags can be any cheaper, "no price haggling here" was the answer.
Since Brad and I went there to buy DVDs a few times, the boss recognised us and said hello ; I took the chance to ask him "your business is getting bigger, isn't it?" He said "you know Xiangyang market is going to be shut down, so I bought someone's handbag business. "
I guess in no time we are going to see more shops on the side streets like this. I'm going to do some hunting - lots of fun!

Hi Andrew,
There is actually no replacement. It is being closed down not relocated.
The official reason is for the land to be redeveloped, the opportunity that brings is for the government to then close the market to help with the protection of IPR.
As you would have read in this post, there are now small stores popping up all over Shanghai selling the same goods - so at least for awhile you will still be able to get your bargains in small local stores, they are easy to spot because of the Louis Vuitton and Prada hand bags hanging up next to the dried meat and laundry!
